GTA 6 Pre-Load Moves Up to November 10 and Needs Up to 212 GB

Rockstar moved the GTA 6 pre-load two days earlier, to November 10, and says the file needs up to 212 GB. Launch stays November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar has moved the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-load up by two days. In a Newswire post on November 3, the studio said digital pre-loading now starts on Tuesday, November 10 instead of November 12, and that the file will need up to 212 GB depending on your device. The launch date does not change: GTA 6 still releases on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The new schedule

  • PS5: digital pre-load opens at midnight local time on November 10, so each region starts at its own midnight.
  • Xbox Series X|S: pre-load opens globally at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10 — that is 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET on November 9, per the regional table MP1st built from Rockstar's times.
  • Code-in-box copies: on retail shelves from November 12. The box holds a download code rather than a disc, so physical buyers start downloading only once they redeem it.
  • Launch: November 19, unchanged.

Rockstar's own pages are not fully consistent yet. DualShockers points out that the Rockstar Store listing and an older section of the support article still mention November 12, while the same support article lists the November 10 times further down. The Newswire post is the current one. DualShockers also notes that the 212 GB figure is an upper bound with no per-platform breakdown, and that it sits close to the 210 GB the PlayStation Game Size account reported for the PS5 version on October 27, which was never official.

How much room 212 GB really is

Console storage on the box is not what you get for games, because the system reserves part of the drive. The usable figures measured at launch, as collected by Digit, are about 667 GB on the original PS5 (825 GB drive), 802 GB on Xbox Series X (1 TB) and 364 GB on Xbox Series S (512 GB). At 212 GB, GTA 6 takes roughly a third of an original PS5, a quarter of a Series X, and close to 60% of a Series S, which leaves a Series S owner with around 150 GB for everything else.

A cheap USB drive will not solve that on its own. Sony's support documentation, quoted by SlashGear, says PS5 games can be kept on USB extended storage but not played from it; they have to go back to the internal SSD or an installed M.2 drive. On Xbox, Microsoft's storage primer draws the same line: games optimized for Series X|S can be stored on USB but only run from the internal SSD or the Seagate Storage Expansion Card. Because GTA 6 is current-generation only, an external drive is useful as parking space for other games, but GTA 6 itself has to live on internal or expansion storage.

Why the extra two days matter

Pre-loading does not unlock the game early, but at this size it buys real time. As rough arithmetic, 212 GB at a sustained 100 Mbps takes close to five hours, and at 50 Mbps more than nine, before any slowdown from launch-week demand. For Fortnite players the window also lands mid-way through the Treasure Hunters mini-season, the week Lil Uzi Vert arrives on November 12 — the season's full calendar is in our Treasure Hunters schedule story. Anyone sharing a Series S between both games will want to sort out storage before November 10 rather than on launch night.
