Netflix entwickelt eine Realserie zu PUBG mit Donald Glover

Netflix announced on October 29 that a live-action series based on *PUBG: Battlegrounds* is in development, with Donald Glover attached to write, direct, executive produce and star, as reported by Deadline and detailed by What's on Netflix. His brother and longtime collaborator Stephen Glover, who co-created and wrote on *Atlanta*, will write and executive produce alongside him.

LV3H is involved in both development and production, per What's on Netflix, and KRAFTON says the franchise holds seven Guinness World Records. Beyond Glover, nobody has been cast, and neither Netflix nor KRAFTON has shared a plot or a production schedule. Bleeding Cool adds that it is unclear whether a script has even been completed.

Adapting the game the genre grew out of

PUBG launched in 2017 as *PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds* and is widely credited with popularizing the format of 100 players dropping onto an island, the template that Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone went on to run with, What's on Netflix writes. That is also the adaptation's challenge: the game has no story of its own. Bleeding Cool sums up a match as being thrown out of a plane, scavenging armor and weapons and outlasting everyone else, and openly questions whether there is still an audience for a PUBG show when other battle royales have since overtaken it in popularity.

It is not the franchise's first attempt at a screen version. In July 2021 KRAFTON announced an animated PUBG project with producer Adi Shankar that was widely reported to be heading to Netflix; it has gone quiet since, and the October 29 announcement does not mention it. With scripts still to be written, What's on Netflix does not expect the live-action series to arrive before 2028 at the earliest.

The format, playable today

For anyone who wants the drop-and-survive loop now rather than in 2028, the closing stages of a battle royale are a whole genre in Fortnite's island ecosystem. On IslandAtlas's October 29 daily chart, TILTED ZONE WARS (3729-0643-9775) sat at No. 8, a zone wars island, the Creative genre that replays a match's final storm circles on loop, and ZERO BUILD ALL WEAPONS Wonkeeland (2898-9209-5513) came in at No. 11 as an all-weapons, no-build free-for-all.
