Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and its first weekend on Steam now has a number attached: a peak of 227,434 concurrent players, according to SteamDB figures reported by GameRant via OpenCritic on October 25. That is roughly twice what last year's Black Ops 7 managed and about 26% below Black Ops 6.

How the last three launches compare on Steam

• Modern Warfare 4 (2026): 227,434 concurrent players at the launch-weekend peak (SteamDB, via GameRant). Tech4Gamers reports a near-identical 227,622.
• Black Ops 6 (2024): about 306,460 at its October 2024 release, a gap of roughly 79,000 players, per GameRant. Tech4Gamers puts it above 315,000.
• Black Ops 7 (2025): a launch-weekend peak only just above 100,000, according to both outlets.

Two caveats apply to all of these. Steam is one storefront out of several: the game also sells through Battle.net, PlayStation and Xbox, and Activision has not published sales or player totals for any of them. And GameRant notes that Modern Warfare 4 and Black Ops 6 sit in the same Steam app, so the counter measures that app rather than giving a clean count for one game.

Why the rebound from Black Ops 7

Tech4Gamers points first to reception, describing Black Ops 7 as "a nearly unanimous critical disappointment" and noting that reviews of Modern Warfare 4 have praised its campaign and DMZ. OpenCritic currently lists the game at 85 ("Mighty").

Distribution also changed. Activision said in May that Modern Warfare 4 "will not be available on the XBOX Game Pass catalog at launch," with the game due to join within a year, as Insider Gaming reported; Black Ops 7 launched on Game Pass. Tech4Gamers argues that is unlikely to be the main reason for the Steam number, since Black Ops 6 also launched on Game Pass and still passed 300,000. Modern Warfare 4 is also the first mainline Call of Duty since 2013 with no PS4 or Xbox One version, per Inquirer Technology.

For scale: Fortnite's islands

IslandAtlas tracks concurrent players on Fortnite's most-played islands from Epic's public data. At 22:00 UTC on October 28, a Wednesday afternoon in the Americas, the 52 islands on our live board added up to 176,876 players, led by PILLARS at 35,544. The record in our data belongs to STEAL THE BRAINROT, which reached 1,087,974 concurrent players on January 11, 2026, almost five times Modern Warfare 4's Steam peak for a single creator-made island.

The comparison has limits. Our numbers count Fortnite players on every platform, SteamDB sees only Steam, and a midweek afternoon is not a launch weekend. What it does show is where a UEFN island's ceiling sits next to the opening weekend of a full-price Call of Duty. The next public Steam reading worth watching is the one when Modern Warfare 4's first season arrives; Activision has not said whether it will publish sales figures before then.
