Unreal Engine 6 Will Drop Blueprints for Verse, UEFN's Language

Epic Games will remove Blueprints, Actors and the C++ Gameplay Framework from Unreal Engine 6, not just deprecate them. CEO Tim Sweeney announced the change at the Unreal Fest Tokyo 2026 keynote on November 3, Inven Global reported, citing on-site coverage from Japanese developer outlet Game Makers. Gameplay logic in UE6 moves to Verse and scenes move to Scene Graph, the language and the entity system that Epic has been running in Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

What Epic announced in Tokyo

  • Keynote slides marked Blueprints, Actors and the C++ Gameplay Framework as "Remove" rather than deprecated.
  • Game logic will be written in Verse. Scenes will be built with Scene Graph, which replaces Actors with entities made of components.
  • Epic described new Verse Gameplay APIs, plus building through MCP (Model Context Protocol) and Python.
  • C++ stays in the engine's lower layers, such as rendering and physics, but not in the gameplay framework.
  • UE6 Early Access is still planned for the end of 2027.

This reverses the plan Epic laid out at Unreal Fest Chicago in June, when Actors and Blueprints were expected to stay in the first version of UE6 and be phased out gradually. GameFromScratch's summary of the Tokyo keynote describes the same shift. Sweeney called it a "painful change" and apologised to developers who are attached to Blueprints.

Why UEFN creators are already ahead

For most Unreal developers, Verse is a new language. For island makers it is the one they already write. At the Tokyo keynote, Epic Games Japan head Takayuki Kawasaki told developers interested in UE6 to try Verse and Scene Graph in UEFN first, which turns the Fortnite editor into the official on-ramp for the next engine. The festival's own Verse session, "What is Verse, and why we built it" by Epic's Magnus Enebakk, covered what Verse brings to UE6 and Scene Graph. Epic Games Japan published the slides on November 5.

Epic says it is taking the same medicine. Sweeney said Fortnite is moving thousands of Blueprints and its remaining C++ gameplay code to Verse. He also tied the decision to AI: according to Inven, he said AI tools had raised productivity inside Epic by 1.5 to 4 times in programming, debugging and level design, and Epic plans AI-assisted tools to convert Blueprints and C++ gameplay code to Verse, in a format it has not decided yet. Asked which AI models know Verse, Sweeney wrote on X that current leading models "saw little Verse organically during training, but that will change by January."

What does not change yet

Projects already in production on Unreal Engine 5 can stay on the UE5 line. Epic also confirmed on X that Unreal Engine 5.9 arrives in Preview next week, with improved AI workflows, web as a target platform, and rendering and animation updates. Nothing in the Tokyo announcement changes how islands are built or published in UEFN today. What it changes is the direction of the rest of Unreal, which is now converging on the tools Fortnite creators use every day.
